British Standards Institution (BSI) Standards

BSI Standards

The British Standards Institution, commonly known as BSI, is the United Kingdom’s National Standards Body. Formed in 1901, BSI was the world’s first national standards body and continues to support innovation, economic growth, quality, safety, and wellbeing through standardization. As the UK’s National Standards Body, BSI is appointed by the UK government to develop British Standards and represent the UK’s interests in standards development at the European and global level.

BSI brings together more than 12,000 experts from industry, government, public bodies, businesses, trade associations, and consumer groups to develop standards that reflect good practice, protect consumers, support market access, and help organizations operate with confidence. BSI publishes more than 3,100 standards each year and maintains the UK’s national catalogue of national and international standards.

Through its role in international and European standards development organizations, BSI helps shape standards used across global markets. BSI is the UK member of ISO, IEC, CEN, CENELEC, and ETSI, and the outcomes of these organizations form 95% of the UK’s national catalogue of standards.

Digital Access to BSI Standards

British Standards provide agreed guidelines, specifications, and frameworks that help organizations improve quality, safety, efficiency, interoperability, and consistency across products, services, systems, and processes. Standards are typically voluntary, but they are widely used by organizations to support certification, demonstrate credibility, meet customer expectations, and align with regulatory or contractual requirements.

Gain easy access to BSI standards with ASTM Compass®. More than 90,000 British Standards are available on ASTM Compass, spanning industries including the built environment, consumer, food and retail, energy, government, healthcare, information and communication technologies, manufacturing, and transport and mobility.

With ASTM Compass, your organization can access BSI standards through one powerful platform designed to simplify standards research and support technical decision-making. With up-to-date standards available anywhere with an internet connection, teams can reduce time spent searching across multiple systems and focus on applying the right information to the work in front of them.

Compass provides one of the most comprehensive libraries of technical information available, including easy navigation through BSI’s extensive collection of standards. With workflow tools like version comparison, annotations, and collaboration features, ASTM Compass helps teams save time, reduce errors, and work more efficiently.
